Acting President attends memorial service for Korean plane crash victims

Acting President Choi Sang-mok attended a memorial service for the victims of the plane crash at Muan International Airport in South Korea on Sunday, the deadliest in the country’s aviation history.

The Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crashed, killing all 175 passengers and four of the six crew members. Two survived.

At the memorial service for the victims, Acting President Choi laid a white wreath in accordance with Korean tradition.

The Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 landed on its belly at Muan Airport on Sunday, lost control of the runway, skidded and exploded. Video of the crash broadcast by South Korean television showed the plane’s landing gear malfunctioning as it landed.

Acting President Choi has ordered an urgent safety inspection of the entire airline’s operating system. South Korea’s transport ministry said on Monday it would inspect 101 Boeing 737-800s operating in South Korea.
