At least 126 killed in Tibet quake

A powerful earthquake struck Nepal and the highlands of western China, killing at least 126 people in Tibet, destroying hundreds of homes and leaving roads littered with debris. Rescue workers were still searching for survivors on Tuesday.

Dozens of aftershocks have struck the remote region, leaving many more people trapped. The epicenter was about 75 kilometers southwest of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest.

Villages have been badly damaged, and rescue workers are searching for survivors in the rubble, some using ladders. At least 188 people were injured in Tibet, on the border with China, according to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency. About 150 aftershocks were recorded in the nine hours after the quake.
