The six-day state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, who died on December 29, will begin today in the United States.

The funeral will begin in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, where the body will be carried through the city for residents to pay their respects. The funeral will be held on the family peanut farm where President Carter grew up, and a 39-ring bell will be rung to honor his 39th presidency.

His body will then be carried to Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, where he served as a state senator and governor. After a moment of silence, the body will be taken to the Carter Presidential Center. The Carter Presidential Center, founded after his presidency, is an organization that supports peace efforts, democratic transitions, and philanthropy around the world. The Carter Center will hold a state funeral for former President Carter from 7 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Tuesday, allowing the public to pay their respects.

On Tuesday, his body will be transported by special Air Force aircraft to the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. From there, his body will be carried by horse-drawn carriage to the U.S. Capitol. His body will lie in state at the Capitol until Thursday morning. A state funeral service will be held at the National Cathedral on Thursday.

The ceremony will be attended by President Joe Biden and all living former U.S. presidents.
