The investigation team filed a petition with the court on Monday to issue an arrest warrant for South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol. The investigation team, which is made up of the police, military and the Corruption Investigation Office of High-ranking Officials (CIOHO), confirmed the application at the Seoul Central District Court.
The request comes after the presidential office refused to accept the request, saying it wanted to question the president on charges of abuse of power and sedition. Presidential lawyer Yoon Kap-keun argued that the arrest warrant was unfounded and that the Corruption Investigation Office lacked the legal authority to handle sedition. His objection was filed with the same court.
The president enjoys immunity from criminal prosecution, but is not granted immunity for sedition or treason. The National Assembly impeached the president on December 14, and President Yun’s fate is now in the hands of the Constitutional Court.
