A New York judge has set a Jan. 10 sentencing date for President-elect Donald Trump in a case involving a hush money payment to a sex worker before the 2016 presidential election.
The sentencing will come 10 days before the presidential inauguration, but Judge Juan M. Merchan indicated in a decision released Friday that he will not be sentenced to prison or fined. But Trump will become the first sitting president to be convicted of a felony when he takes office on Jan. 20.
Trump has been found guilty of 34 counts of lying about his business dealings, and will be sentenced on Jan. 10. The charges include concealing a hush money payment to sex worker Stormy Daniels. Trump has said the charges were false and that he did nothing wrong.
He is expected to appear in court on Jan. 10, either in person or by mail, at the sentencing hearing. The judge has summoned Trump to appear online, but his lawyers are expected to appeal to prevent him from being sentenced that day.
