Kokang debt family arrested by China charged with crimes

A total of 39 people, including members of the Ming family and their mafia gang, who have been based in the Kokang region of northern Shan State for years and have been accused of defrauding China and the world, including through online fraud, forced labor, and other crimes, were indicted in a Chinese court today.

According to local reports, the Ming family members indicted by the Wenzhou District Court in Zhejiang Province include Ming Guoping (aka Ming Xiaoping), Ming Julan, and Ming Zhenzhen.

The Ming family was indicted by provincial authorities on December 30 for using armed forces to commit online fraud and other crimes targeting Chinese citizens, international murder, intentional infliction of harm, illegal detention, gambling, and drug trafficking.

In November 2023, the Myi family was arrested by the military council and extradited to China. The Myanmar military council said that the Myi family’s father, Myi Xiaocheng, had died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while receiving treatment.

The Wenzhou City Court is investigating thousands of suspects in connection with the cases, which have resulted in the loss of billions of yuan in Chinese citizens’ money and the deaths of many people. More than 10,000 cases have been filed, Xinhua reported. The newspaper cited Chinese prosecutors as saying that Myanmar citizens have been granted legal rights, including the right to hire a lawyer and an interpreter.
