President-elect Donald Trump outlines foreign policy

President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to take office in two weeks, held a news conference at his Florida home Tuesday to outline his foreign policy. He has repeatedly demanded the release of all hostages taken by Hamas over the past year, warning that he will face “strong and decisive action” if they fail to do so.

Trump said he did not want to jeopardize his envoy’s Middle East peace talks, but that if he does not get results while he is president, he will face “strong action” in the Middle East, which is not good for Hamas or anyone else. Trump also said he would like to meet with the Russian leader on Ukraine.

He pledged to resolve the conflict in Ukraine, but did not say how. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico, said Canada should become a U.S. state, and said he would rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of Mexico.

Trump did not say how the United States would acquire Greenland, which is a self-governing territory of Denmark. But he reiterated on Tuesday that Greenland is needed for economic security. Trump said he could not guarantee that he would not impose military or economic pressure on Greenland and the Panama Canal.
