Syria hopes to establish a strategic partnership with Ukraine, Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan Al-Shibani said on December 30.
“We will establish strategic cooperation between Ukraine and Syria in all political, economic and social areas. We will also start scientific and technological cooperation with Ukraine. We welcome the Ukrainian Foreign Minister’s visit to Syria,” the Syrian Foreign Minister said.
The Ukrainian Foreign Minister’s visit comes at a time when Russia’s influence in Syria is waning and the two countries discussed a range of issues related to bilateral cooperation.
Russia was a key backer of former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and granted him asylum in Russia when he fled the country. Russia said it was in contact with the new Syrian government, including on the future of Russian military facilities in Syria.
Ukraine has pledged to provide food aid to Syria, with the first shipment of 500 metric tons, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced on Friday.
