Ukraine pledges support for new Syrian authorities

Ukraine has pledged to support the new Syrian authorities that have ousted Russia’s main ally, Bashar al-Assad. The Ukrainian foreign minister was in Damascus, Syria, and met with the Syrian leader who ousted Bashar al-Assad on Monday.

Syrian leader Ahmed al-Shara, ministers and a Ukrainian delegation discussed “important issues,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on his X social media page. The Ukrainian president said the UN World Food Program (WFP) would send Ukraine 500 tons of wheat flour.

Ninety percent of the Syrian population lives in poverty, and half do not know where their next meal will come from, according to the UN. Syria is beginning to shift from ties with Iran and Russia to ties with the West and Gulf Arab states.

On Monday, the new government appointed Maysaa Sabreen as the governor of the central bank, making her the second woman to hold a leadership position under leader Al-Ashraf.
